R1497: Exploring Literacy through Hip Hop and Rap Music in Splash! Spring 2011 (Apr. 16 - 17, 2011)
Through analysis of several popular rap songs, we will discover how and why some rappers are more effective communicators than others. There will be a set of mini lectures and discussions pertaining to rhyme schemes, literary devices, and use of vocabulary. Students will be encouraged to find their own voice outside of normal school expectations, and produce a set of lyrics on a topic of their choice. This course puts no boundaries on creative expression and will actively address some of the negative stereotypes associated with rap music.
