V1243: Introduction to Harmony and Tuning in Splash! Spring 2011 (Apr. 16 - 17, 2011)
What is harmony, and why do we hear it? When we say that two or more musical notes are in harmony, what about those notes is causing us to perceive them as such? How do we use these harmonic intervals to construct scales in which we can play music? Might there be a use in deliberately singing and playing out of tune? We'll explore these questions with an introduction to the harmonic series, and by using various techniques to construct diatonic and chromatic scales.
