V3203: The Music of Death in Splash! Fall 2013 (Nov. 02 - 03, 2013)
What do Star Wars, The Lion King, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Home Alone, The Shining, Sweeney Todd and Camille Saint-Saen's "Danse Macabre" have in common? They all incorporate the Dies Irae, an ancient musical theme for death. In this class we will attempt to understand how this theme survived seven centuries of music (classical, film score, musical and pop), and yet remains virtually unknown to most listeners. We will also listen to some of the coolest usese of the theme. No musical knowledge necessary!
